Ahead of the October 10 governorship election in Ondo state, a strong supporter of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Idanre, Ondo state was allegedly killed by suspected thugs working for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Following the development, there was tension in the community as residents protested the alleged killing of the young man, simply identified as Taye.
Sources said the incident happened on Wednesday night at Alade-Idanre by political thugs allegedly led by one Sunday Ogundiroyo (Aka Agarahu) and Bola Akinniranye.
The deceased, Taye, was said to be a staunch supporter of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in the community.
His death, brought the leading cocoa producing community into turmoil.
Bonfires were said to have been made at different locations on major roads of the local government headquarters.
It was learnt that the deceased was chased to Alade area of Idanre by his killers where he was brutally murdered.
A source said Taye was attacked and killed at Alade yesterday (Wednesday) around 9:00 pm.
It added that those who led the thugs to perpetrate the crime have ran for cover.
The source queried the rationale behind his killing saying, “When has it become a crime to be a member of an opposition party in this state?
The source lamented that he was killed by paid hoodlums for putting on the fez cap of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The body of Taye has been reportedly deposited at the General Hospital in Idanre and police have begun the investigation into his killing.
The Chairman of the ZLP in Idanre, Claudus, who confirmed the incident, alleged that the thugs who killed Taye were sponsored by the chieftains of the APC, who had been attacking members of the opposition parties in the Idanre community.
According to him, the deceased was killed by the APC thugs yesterday because he was canvassing support for the ZLP, being a member of our party.
He added that APC had broken the peace accord reached at the palace of the Monarch of Idanre with other political parties ahead of this contest.
The ZLP chairman pointed out that they had informed the security operatives about the killing, adding that his party would seek justice.
The Director of Media and Publicity of the APC in the state, Steve Otaloro, when contacted, said he was not yet aware of the incident.
The Public Relations Officer for the state Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Teo-Leo Ìkorò confirmed the story.
He said, “There was political skirmish last night in Idanre in which one person was killed. It was a mob action. But a detachment of Policemen had been sent to the town to maintain law and order”
Ikoro added that investigation has commenced on the incident to bring perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.
