A new Journalism Association known as The Fourth-Estate Professional Society was inaugurated last Friday in Ilorin, Kwara State. The Association has Dr. Babatunde Salami who is a Facilitator/Supervisor at the Mass Communication Department, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Ilorin Study Centre and the publisher of the TopSearch Digital Magazine as the pioneer President.
In his acceptance speech, the president of the Society said the Association can not clash in any way with the Nigeria Union of Journalists but compliments the efforts of the Union in ensuring the media profession is sanitized of fake news and junk journalism.
At the induction of the pioneer members was a one time former Minister of Sports and Youths, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi who was the Guest Speaker at the occasion. Abdullahi said the FPS is coming up at the right time to fight the fake news syndrome in the profession.
Also at the occasion was His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Atanda Sanni, Woleola II, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo who was the royal father of the day and double as the Chairman of the occasion. The monarch appeals to journalists to be professionals and abide by the ethics of the noble profession.
Among those that were inducted as pioneer members were Mr. Michael A Olanrewaju (MAO), the GM Diamond 88.7 FM Ilorin, Ms. Christie Doyin Adekoya, former editor, National Pilot, Hajia Silifat Adeyemi, Hajia Biliqees Oladimeji, Raliat Ibrahim of NTA Ilorin among others.
Nine state chapters of the Association were represented at the induction. Among the states were: Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Niger, Kebi, Nasarawa, Kwara State and the Abuja Federal Capital Territory.
