Electric Pole Falls, Kills Passer-by in Akoko

The ancient town of Ikare-Akoko in Ondo state was thrown into confusion on Wednesday when an electricity pole in which two Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) officials were working on, fell and killed a passer-by.

Besides, one of the electricity company officials sustained serious injuries.

An eye witness said the pole fell  due to its weakness. The other BEDC official was said to have escaped unhurt.

Sources said the family of the deceased who died instantly, are Muslims.

They regarded the incident as an act of God while the wounded official was rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko for treatment.

The ill-fated electricity poles were being relocated due to ongoing dualisation of Ikare township road by the Ondo state government.

Sympathisers  were in large number at the scene of the incident.

The Police Area Commander for Ikare, Assistant Commissioner of Police,ACP Razak Rauf confirmed the unfortunate incident and said police had taken appropriate step on the case.

Efforts to speak with the Chief Medical Director (CMD)of the State Specialist Hospital,Ikare  Dr. Ayodele Ogunlade was not successful.

Also,the officer-in-charge of BEDC Ikare Akoko Business Centre could not be reached.
