Anambra Guber: Aspirant urges PDP to cede ticket to Anambra Central

A governorship hopeful in Anambra, Chief Obiora Okonkwo, has appealed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pick its flagbearer for the upcoming election from Anambra Central.
Okonkwo made the appeal on Thursday in Awka, when he formally declared his ambition to vie for the governorship seat on the platform of PDP.
He said that Anambra Central Senatorial District should be given the chance to produce the party’s candidate for equity and fairness.
“Anambra central only represented the party in 2003, north produced the candidates in 2013 and 2017, while south took its turn in 1999, 2007 and 2010.
“I met some aspirants from central and after weighing our chances of winning the party primary, they dropped their ambitions and decided to support me.
“It would be a misconception to say I am the only aspirant from the district because other aspirants initially had the intention to contest,” Okonkwo said.
He claimed that he possessed the qualities to transform the state and expressed optimism that God would give him victory.
“PDP is on the right track in the state and with the quality of its state leadership, we will surely reclaim power.
“We have to ensure credible and fair primary to choose the right candidate for the election.
“The election will not be easy because we are going to contest against a party that has been in power for 16 years,” the aspirant said.
He admitted that selecting candidates for elections was an internal affair of political parties, adding that PDP was not an exception.
“It would be wrong for members of other political parties to influence how PDP manages its affairs.
“Winning the party’s primary is not the ultimate but being able to win the election proper and deliver good governance to the people,” Okonkwo said. (NAN)
