AKEREDOLU: One Man Many Hurdles for Second Term Bid

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all the political parties in Ondo State to conduct the primary elections for their flag bearers to emerge between July 2 and July 25, 2020.  While electioneering campaigns would commence on July 13 and end 48 hours to the governorship election in the state. The gubernatorial election is slated for October 10, 2020.

The Magazine gathered from APC members and electorate, the chances and hurdles before the incumbent governor, Rotimi Akeredolu on his second term bid.

The intra-party crisis in the ruling APC in the state is no longer news.  A formidable political group named “Unity Forum” headed by Ali Olanusi is gathered to be number one antagonist of the sitting governor within the party.  Most leaders in APC belong to the group and cut across the local governments in the state. The mission of the group according to an insider is to produce an aspirant to contest and defeat Akeredolu in the forthcoming party primary.

This is a tough hurdle for the governor to cross if the forces remain against him in the primary. A source fonfirmed.

Apart from the Unity Forum, there are other aspirants who are also not disposed to the second term bid of the governor.  The individual groups are canvassing for aspirants of their choice.  All the efforts made by the governor to positively influenced the above two forces to his side is of no result.  TopSearch Magazine reliably gathered.

Speaking at the dinner held in commemoration of his third year anniversary, governor Akeredolu openly drew a battle line with the Unity Forum and said is prepared to fight them to the end.

Apart from the hurdle within the state, the magazine gathered from reliable sources that the governor is in trouble with the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole. Meanwhile, the decision of the party’s national headquarters is final on any party related matters.  How Akeredolu would politically beat home(Unity Forum) and out(APCNational Secretariat) is a major hurdle for him. An  APC stalwart confirmed that Akeredolu had recently confronted and scared  the national leadership of the party that, if is not returned for the second term, APC would not win the gubernatorial election in the State.

According an insider, the only grace the ruling party has in the state is to resolve the intra-party war between the governor and the Unity Forum. Otherwise if either of the two agrees to team up with the PDP in the forthcoming gubernatorial election, APC should forget Ondo State. The source confirmed.

Another political analyst confirmed to the magazine that the trio groups (Governor Rotimi, Unity Forum and PDP) may not have a clean clear victory except if two out of them team up.  The analyst is of the opinion that if the leadership of APC wishes to win the governorship election, they should mend the broken fence in the party, otherwise, protest vote would favour PDP in which Unity Forum or Akeredolu may eventually work for in protest.

In a related development, the magazine reliably gathered that Ondo electorates are mindful of zoning arrangement which they have been subjected to from long time.  If there is no crisis within the ruling APC, the chance of the incumbent governor is certain because is from Ondo North in which people would preferred him completing the tenure. Nevertheless, where the opposition PDP picks candidate may also serve as an hurdle for Akeredolu.  If the PDP picks a candidate from Ondo North where the governor comes from, the candidate may serve as a best bet for the senatorial district against the cold war in APC.
